Common questions and answers about our occupational therapy services for pediatrics.

Are you considering occupational therapy for your child? Below, we’ve answered some of the questions most commonly asked by parents and caregivers. If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team and we would be happy to help!

  • What is pediatric occupational therapy?

Pediatric occupational therapy helps children gain independence while also strengthening the development of fine motor skills, sensory motor skills, and visual motor skills that children need to function and socialize. Occupational therapy may include facilitating the use of the hands, promoting skills for listening and following directions, self-regulation, social skills, play skills, dressing, and grooming. Some other areas of focus may include helping children improve abstract reasoning, problem-solving, decision-making, perceptual skills, memory, sequencing, and motor planning. All of these skills are crucial for independent living and success across many environments.

  • What ages of patients do you treat?

We provide pediatric occupational therapy services for children ages 0-18.

  • What can I expect from my child’s first visit with you?

Your child’s first visit to our OT Pediatric Therapy Clinic will consist of a complete evaluation and assessment which provides the foundation for their treatment plan. We will conduct an interview with you or the child’s caregivers to gather important background and developmental information and address areas of concern. Then, our occupational therapist will perform a play-based assessment during which the child may perform functional skills such as ball play, fine motor play, visual motor and perceptual tasks, gross motor tasks, emotional-care tasks, social interactions, and visual processing. Following the evaluation, the therapist will address any concerns, recommend next steps, and work with you to create goals and a treatment plan.

  • What should my child wear during their treatment sessions?

Because occupational therapy involves movement, we recommend dressing your child in loose, comfortable play clothing. A t-shirt, sweatpants, socks, and rubber-soled shoes are appropriate.

  • Do I need a referral for therapy services?

Yes, we require a referral by a physician or licensed healthcare professional to begin therapy services

  • Will insurance pay for my visits?

Medical coverage will vary, but many health insurance plans cover our services. If treatment is recommended for your child by a physician, please request a referral from your child's provider, schedule an appointment and our office will obtain authorization for treatment from your insurance provider. Once approved, we will contact you by phone to review benefits and schedule an evaluation. We accept insurance payments from the following providers:

  • Do you involve parents in the treatment process?

While it is not required for parents/caregivers to be present during their child’s therapy services, we welcome and encourage parents and/or caregivers to play an active role in their child’s treatment plan. Each session allows time for the parent/caregiver and therapist to discuss progress, review goals, and address concerns. Exercises and/or activities are provided for the parent/caregiver and child to perform at home to increase carryover in all settings.
